Thinking Lab Workshop at Savistara Gurukul: Building Calm, Confident and Thoughtful Preteens
The preteen years are an important stage of emotional, social and personal development. Children between the ages of 9 and 13 experience many changes as they grow. They may sometimes struggle with anxiety, anger, distractions, carelessness, impulsive reactions and difficulty making thoughtful decisions.

At Savistara Gurukul, Bangalore, the Thinking Lab Workshop is designed to help preteens understand their thoughts, emotions and actions in a practical and engaging way.
The workshop encourages children to pause before reacting, understand situations clearly, think about their choices, and learn from their experiences.
The 5-Step Thinking Process
The Thinkers Lab Workshop introduces a simple and memorable process:
1. Pause
Children learn the importance of stopping for a moment before reacting emotionally or impulsively. A simple pause can help create space between a situation and a reaction.
2. Understand
Students are encouraged to understand what is happening, identify the problem and recognise their feelings. Understanding the situation is an important first step towards managing emotions effectively.
3. Think
Children learn to consider different possibilities and think about the consequences of their actions. This develops critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
4. Choose
Once they understand the situation and think through their options, students learn to make better and more responsible choices.
5. Try & Improve
Every experience is an opportunity to learn. Children are encouraged to try, reflect on their actions and continuously improve.
“When children learn to pause before reacting, they begin to understand their emotions, think more clearly and make better choices.”
Helping Children Manage Anxiety and Anger
Anxiety and anger can sometimes make it difficult for children to think clearly. The Thinking Lab Workshop helps students recognise emotional responses and develop healthier ways to deal with challenging situations.
Instead of reacting immediately, children learn to ask themselves:
What is happening?
How am I feeling?
What can I do?
What could happen if I make this choice?
What can I learn from this experience?
These simple questions help children develop greater emotional awareness and self-regulation.
Reducing Distraction and Carelessness
Distraction and carelessness can affect a child's learning, relationships and daily responsibilities. Through practical activities, the workshop encourages students to become more aware of their actions and surroundings.
The Pause–Understand–Think–Choose–Try & Improve approach helps children slow down, focus better and develop a more thoughtful approach to everyday situations.
Developing Independent Thinking
The goal of the Thinkers Lab Workshop is not simply to tell children what to do. Instead, it helps them develop the ability to think independently and make responsible decisions.
These skills can support children in:
Managing emotional reactions
Handling anxiety and stressful situations
Controlling anger and impulsive behaviour
Improving focus and attention
Reducing careless mistakes
Making thoughtful decisions
Learning from mistakes
Developing confidence and responsibility
Learning Beyond Academics
At Savistara Gurukul, learning goes beyond textbooks and examinations. The development of a child also includes emotional intelligence, self-awareness, creativity, communication, problem-solving and decision-making.
The Thinkers Lab Workshop is an example of how children can learn essential life skills through practical experiences and meaningful activities.
By learning to Pause, Understand, Think, Choose, and Try & Improve, preteens can gradually develop the confidence and awareness needed to navigate everyday challenges.
The Thinking Lab Workshop at Savistara Gurukul, Bangalore, provides preteens with a practical framework to manage anxiety, anger, distractions, carelessness and impulsive reactions.
By encouraging children to stop, understand, think clearly, make better choices and learn from their experiences, the workshop helps nurture calm, confident, responsible and thoughtful young individuals.
