Celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi with a Green Initiative: Seed Ball Activity at Savistara Gurukul as life skill activity
This Ganesh Chaturthi, Savistara Gurukul celebrated the festival with a unique and meaningful initiative—embracing eco-friendly practices through a Seed Ball activity. While festivals are times of joy and celebration, they can sometimes have unintended environmental consequences, especially when traditions like painted or chemical-laden Ganesha idols are involved. At Savistara, we took the opportunity to educate children about the importance of protecting the environment by avoiding such idols, and instead, marking the occasion with nature-friendly activities.
Seed Balls: Nature's Gift for Forest Growth
Seed balls are a powerful tool for controlling soil erosion and reforesting barren lands. They consist of seeds encapsulated in a mixture of clay and compost, creating a protective coating that nurtures the seeds until conditions are right for them to sprout. Over time, they naturally degrade, allowing the seeds to take root, helping combat soil erosion and encouraging forest growth.
Hands-On Learning in the School Garden
The children at Savistara Gurukul were excited to get their hands dirty—literally! In a hands-on activity in the school garden, they learned how to create these wonderful Seed Balls themselves. Guided by the teachers, the children mixed the right proportions of clay, compost, and seeds, shaping them into balls. The joy of crafting something that could contribute to the growth of new plants and trees was truly a memorable experience for the young minds.
Each child took home their own Seed Balls and placed them in a pot to observe the seeds' growth into saplings. This nurturing process offered a tangible and engaging lesson on the cycle of life, giving them a sense of responsibility for nature.
A Green Tradition That Can Continue at Home
What makes Seed Balls so appealing is their simplicity. These balls can easily be made at home with basic ingredients. Once dried, they can be stored and used anytime. Whether you are on a highway, passing through a dry area, or visiting a barren patch of land, you can toss the Seed Balls into the environment and let nature take its course. Over time, these humble Seed Balls grow into thriving plants, contributing to the reforestation of our planet.
A Step Towards a Cleaner, Greener Future
The Seed Ball initiative at Savistara Gurukul is not just an activity—it’s a step toward raising eco-conscious children. Through engaging, hands-on learning, the children now understand that festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi can be celebrated with respect for the environment. They’ve learned that they can make a difference, whether by avoiding harmful materials in their idols or by helping grow new life through Seed Balls.
As these young saplings grow, both in pots and in the wild, so too does the sense of responsibility and care in the hearts of our children—a seed that, we hope, will continue to blossom for generations to come.
