Harvesting Turmeric at Savistara Gurukul: A Hands-On Learning Experience
At Savistara Gurukul, our connection to nature is at the heart of our learning. We maintain a beautiful garden filled with a variety of plants, trees, and medicinal herbs. From the colorful blooms of hibiscus, jasmine, and parijata to fruit-bearing trees like mango, jackfruit, guava, papaya, and banana, our garden is alive with nature’s wonders. We also grow medicinal plants such as tulsi, giloy, amla, pudina (mint), betel leaf, turmeric, and even coconut and areca palms.
Recently, we had the opportunity to harvest fresh turmeric from our garden, and it was a truly exciting learning experience for the children.
From Garden to Golden Powder: The Turmeric Harvest
The process of harvesting and preparing turmeric was both fun and educational. Our gardener began by carefully digging up the turmeric roots, which the children helped clean. Everyone got involved, and the excitement of working together made the experience even more special.
After the roots were cleaned, the children eagerly assisted in cutting the turmeric into thin slices. These slices were spread out under the sun to dry for 3 to 4 days. The children learned the importance of patience as they waited for the turmeric to dry completely.
Once the slices were fully dried, they were ground into fine, fresh turmeric powder. The children were amazed to see the final product—a vibrant golden powder made right at school!
A Tasty Treat: Golden Milk with Fresh Turmeric
To celebrate their hard work, the children enjoyed a special treat—golden milk made with the freshly prepared turmeric powder. This nutritious and soothing drink, known for its health benefits, was a big hit, and the children cherished the experience of drinking something they had helped create from start to finish.
Learning from Nature: A Garden Full of Life
The turmeric harvest is just one example of how Savistara’s garden teaches children about nature, sustainability, and the joy of growing and preparing their own food. Our garden is home to many wonderful plants and trees that not only provide fresh fruits and vegetables but also create an opportunity for hands-on learning.
As the children grow alongside our plants, they learn valuable lessons about the environment, the importance of natural resources, and how we can work in harmony with nature to create something truly special.
